The Benefits of Elderberry Syrup
In the herbal world, it's one of the more common remedies used to support your immune system. Elderberry, (Sambucus nigra) is traditionally recommended for treatment of cold, influenza and influenza-like illnesses. It is believed if you take it at the first sign of a cold, it may shorten the duration of your symptoms. As we head into the cold and flu season, make your immune system a priority.
Simple Elderberry Syrup (alcohol free)
3.5 C water
1 C raw honey
2/3 C dried Elderberries (or 1 1/3 C of Fresh)
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
2 tbsp fresh grated ginger
Combine all ingredients, except honey in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for approx. 1 hour to reduce the volume by 1/2. Remove from heat, cool slightly and strain thru cheesecloth. While it is warm (and after straining), sweeten with honey. Store in the fridge in a Mason jar. 1 tsp daily for immunity boosting support.
